On Mother’s Day (May 8) this year, I ran my first 5k! I didn’t puke, faint, or die, so I consider all of this a win! By mile 1.5 I was grumbling a little but I got a second wind around mile 2.5 and was able to finish! I was dead last in my training group and also dead last in my age category, but for me it wasn’t about speed, it was about accomplishing a goal that I had! And guess what? I’m hooked now! I can’t wait to run more.
There was a lot of energy at the starting line, which I think was helpful as well…especially considering I had (and still have) an allergy/head cold thing going on. Despite that, I was able to run for about 6 minutes without stopping on the first go. Looking back I think I started off a little too strongly, so I’ll have to remember to rein it in a little when I do my next one (which is June 5th!).
I wasn’t the last person to finish, either, which was validating! I finished in about 48 minutes (I think my official time was 47:37) and that was better than I was expecting considering I had all that nasty head/chest stuff going on. I was hoping for under 55 minutes and I met my goal!
I am so thankful to Fleet Feet Cleveland and the No Boundaries training program. I met a lot of great people and I loved it so much I signed up for the summer session! My goal is to run more and walk less and maybe get a little faster!
After the 5k, my husband, my in-laws (who came to run the race with me!) and I all got cleaned up and headed for breakfast. We followed that up with a trip to the botanical gardens and then went for a yummy seafood dinner.
Overall, it was a great day! I am pretty proud of myself and I am so excited to do the Race for the Place in June! I am raising money for The Gathering Place, a local organization that provides support for individuals and their families with a cancer diagnosis – free of charge. There is never a cost to use their services. I have had so many family members touched by cancer that I cannot think of a better organization to support.
