My good friend from childhood, Courtney, recently started her own bath product company! It’s based in Florida and it’s called Body Astrology. She specializes in bath soaks and sugar scrubs and was gracious enough to send me some samples to try out and review, and also let me interview her about how she got into this business!
How did you get into making natural body products?
I have always been a little obsessed when it comes to bath products. My bathroom was constantly overflowing with the latest and greatest product, but nothing seemed to give me the results I was looking for. There was nothing that checked all my boxes, so I began experimenting on my own. I began by making products that I loved and used on a daily basis. Looking at the mass produced products I saw that they had so many ingredients that I couldn’t pronounce, and knew that I wanted to make mine all natural.
Finally a finished product took shape and I loved it so I began giving to friends and family as gifts. They loved it too and it was then that I knew I needed to pursue the dream of starting my own company.
Can you tell me a little about the process you go through when choosing your products?
Originally I started just making products and scents that I loved. The most important part is the research of the natural essential oils to find great scents that also have multiple benefits. I am constantly thinking of new ingredients for additional benefits and recipes for new products.
What is the biggest challenge you face when you’re creating your products?
One of the biggest challenges is knowing that I won’t be able to please everyone with the products. I just try to make the best products I can and try to keep perspective. Another challenge is coming up with competitively scented products. Many people (myself included) love the designer scents you see in a lot of stores, however it is not always possible to duplicate these when using natural oils.
Any advice for someone wanting to create their own natural body products or start their own business?
Find something that you are passionate about. No matter how much you want to be your own boss or make money, you have to love what you are doing every day. There will be good days, bad days and everything in between, never give up and just keep moving forward. I read a quote once that I absolutely loved, “If you don’t think about quitting and giving it all up at least once a day then you are doing something wrong.”
Also, research everything! You need to know your products, your business and the industry. There is so much information available online that can help from the idea phase and beyond. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, there are many centers and organizations that help with starting small businesses.
Courtney Shields is a small business owner in Fort Myers, Florida. She specializes in all natural handmade bath products.
As a recent transplant from Western Massachusetts, she enjoys spending her free time exploring Southwest Florida with her husband Gary, antiquing, and trying as many ice creams shops as she can.
Courtney sent me samples of her bath soaks and sugar scrubs. I received bath soaks in eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon, orange, and lavender. Folks, I cannot get enough of the peppermint and orange bath soaks. They smell fabulsous (well, all of them did – these were just two of my favorites!). They also don’t leave me feeling like I’m covered in some weird kind of film as I’ve experienced in some other bath soaks. The crystals also dissolved well in my bathwater, so there was no weird uncomfortable feeling of sitting on things.
I received sugar scrubs in orange, lemon, cedarwood (for my hubby!), peppermint, and lavender. The sugar scrubs exfoliated really well and again, didn’t leave a film on me like some I’ve used in the past. They also left my insanely dry skin feeling soft and smooth without feeling greasy. I love the lavender sugar scrub to calm me down in the evening and the lemon woke me right up in the morning!
I highly encourage you to take a look at Courtney’s company, Body Astrology! She makes great, affordable products. I know I will definitely be buying more of the soaks and scrubs!
