Hi! I’m Chani. I started this blog to chronicle my journey to get healthy – body, mind, and spirit.
I live in Ohio with my husband and our furbabies: a really fat orange tabby cat and a stinky scaredy dog.
By day, I work as a social worker at a community mental health center. I also have two part-time jobs as an online therapist and a supervisor/therapist at a private counseling practice. By night, I’m a superhero. Just kidding! I’m a graduate student in public health, and I also try to fit in fun things like shopping, trying new recipes, spending time with friends, and binge-watching shows on Netflix. Recently, I’ve gotten into running. I’m not sure how, since in the past I generally only ran when something was chasing me (and I couldn’t fight it off).
So. Why this blog? Simple. I have always struggled with “being healthy”.
For the longest time, I struggled with (and still do!) my weight and body image. In 2014, I started treatment for binge eating disorder and successfully completed an intensive outpatient program. I haven’t binged since, but I still struggle with feeling beautiful and worthy.
In November 2014, I decided to start the process to have Roux-N-Y gastric bypass surgery. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s a procedure that decreases the size of the stomach and bypasses part of the intestine – so not only do I eat less, but I absorb things differently as well. Combined, this makes you lose weight.
On May 1, 2015, I was wheeled into the operating room to have this procedure done. It took months of hard work: nutritionist visits, psychological testing, surgeon consults, and beginning a healthy eating and exercise plan. Since then, I’ve lost 175 lbs. It hasn’t always been easy, but I am infinitely happier and healthier. I still have a long way to go, but I am hoping that blogging about the experience will help keep me accountable, and inspire others along the way.
Here, I hope that you find support, humor, strength, motivation, recipes, and most of all, hope.
I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org if you ever have any questions or just need some support!
